This programme begins with one of the bold and brilliant Op. 12 sonatas, music of a confident young genius in full spate. Also in this concert, the fiercely compressed A minor sonata, Op. 23, is contrasted with the sublime G major, Op. 96, whose rarefied lyricism looks ahead to Beethoven’s so-called ‘third period’.
