Monkfish / Ruth Theodore / Superloose @ The Wheatsheaf, Oxford
Saturday 28 February 2015, 8:20 pm - 11:00 pm
£3.50 (advance) / £4.50 (door)
Monkfish: With influences such as Thin White Rope and Lee Hazlewood, Monkfish are Oxford’s original purveyors of guitar driven dark country gothic rock. From twisted, sleazy blues to grim disturbing noise, from wistful melancholy to the inherent distress of the human condition, theirs is a wild journey of the soul… with really good tunes.
Ruth Theodore: A songwriter like no other. With words as dangerous as her guitar playing, Ruth Theodore reminds us why songwriting is important in the first place. Refreshingly original and relentlessly imaginative. “Her tales leave you breathless” – Mojo; “She is remarkable” – The Guardian; “Angular, cryptic and engaging” – The Observer. Plus, she’s coming without a band, but with a male vocal trio to back her up.
Superloose: A ramshackle Abingdon troupe closely linked to the excellent Skittle Alley night, Superloose play strange 21st century skiffle. With joyful eclecticism the music meanders through ska, bluegrass, music hall, rock’n’roll and elsewhere, with a tiny spark of punk attitude illuminating their rocky road. Quirky, catchy, and fun.
