SUMMARY:Robin Michael (cello) & Daniel Tong (piano) @ Jacqueline du Pré Music Building\, Oxford
DESCRIPTION:Moscheles: 3 Melodic-Contrapuntal Studies\nBrahms: Cello Sonata no.1 in E minor Op.38\nSchumann: Funf Stücke im Volkston\nBrahms: Cello Sonata no.2 in F major Op.99\nBy turns monumental\, intimate\, and enigmatic\, Brahms’s two sonatas are cornerstones of the Romantic cello repertoire. The thoroughly-wrought Sonata no.1 treats the cello and piano almost as equal partners\, featuring dramatic exchanges between the two instruments\, while Sonata no.2 – written over 20 years after the first – is particularly adventurous in its wide-ranging modulations and harmonic scheme. Two sets of character pieces – one by Ignaz Moscheles\, a friend and teacher of Mendelssohn\, and the other written by Schumann ‘in the folk style’ – introduce the halves of tonight’s programme.\nThe ticket price includes entry to a pre-concert talk at 6.30 pm\, given by broadcaster and writer Richard Wigmore.\nMore information at www.sthildas.ox.ac.uk/jdp-music-building
