SUMMARY:Andris Nelsons conducts Brahms Cycle @ Sheldonian Theatre\, Oxford
DESCRIPTION:Andris Nelsons continues a duo of concerts with the Philharmonia Orchestra with Brahms' epic Second Piano Concerto. This is a symphonic powerhouse of scorching virtuosity that the composer mischievously described as 'a set of little piano pieces'. Hélène Grimaud will no doubt bring her characteristic passion and drive to the work.\nThe majestic Fourth Symphony was the last of his works that Brahms saw performed. Applause broke out at the end of every movement leaving the great man with tears streaming down his face. Tonight’s performance will no doubt produce powerful emotions from the rapport between Nelsons and this acclaimed orchestra. Early booking is recommended.\nHélène Grimaud pianoBrahms Piano Concerto No. 2~interval~Brahms Symphony No. 4\nTickets available from www.musicatoxford.com/Concerts/Events1314/Philharmonia_Oct.html\, telephone Music At Oxford Box Office on 01865 244806\, or buy in person at Music At Oxford\, Osney Lock Boathouse\, Osney Lock\, Bridge Street\, Oxford\, OX2 0AX.

SUMMARY:M@sh Opera @ Jacqueline du Pré Music Building\, Oxford
DESCRIPTION:The notions of chance and indeterminacy were essential to much of John Cage’s output\, and they are particularly vital for his music-theatre piece Roaratorio. Instead of a traditional musical score\, Cage provided a set of instructions on how any book may be adapted for ensemble – leaving decisions on the subject\, duration\, and scoring of the piece to the performers involved. James Joyce’s playful and mysterious Finnegans Wake is the chosen text for these two performances\, which promise to be provocative\, bewildering\, and compelling events.\nMore information at www.sthildas.ox.ac.uk/jdp-music-building
