These two poets were discovered by Schubert only late in life but inspired some of his greatest masterpieces; six settings of Rückert and one of Leitner in 1822-23, and a further ten settings of Leitner in the last year of his life. The Rückert song ‘Sei mir gegrüsst’ provides the central set of variations in the virtuosic Fantasy for violin and piano.
